Having Identity with School Uniforms

There are lots of discussions and debates about the relevance of school uniforms in the quality of learning that a particular school gives its students. There can be endless debates about this but for schools already with uniforms that their students wear, they find many benefits they get regarding this and also the students and parents swear to this. The many negative reactions may come from students and parents in schools without this uniform policy and its sudden implementation. Their other option may be just to go to schools without the uniform policy and there will be no stopping them on what to wear to school.

For students in schools with this uniform policy, they will find that they really belong and they are part of an organization or community. This will give them identity and thus the confidence they get, being part of a prestigious community. They will find lesser distractions because they don’t have to worry on what to wear to school. Their confidence can come from the fact that they are all wearing the same when coming to school. With the lesser distractions and the focus they have on their lessons, greater learning will follow from the students in the schools observed.

When the students are all wearing the same, there will be no competition on who wear the best and the branded clothes. Uniforms in schools will be lesser expensive than without, and buying a full wardrobe for the children. This can give undue disadvantage to the lesser privileged students who cannot afford the expensive and branded clothes. This can also lessen the confidence already acquired by the students, with the less privileged students having tendencies of feeling inferior. With this happening, there will come some incidence of bullying, with the well off students taunting the others who are not wearing their brand or style of clothes.

The debates about this can go on and on, especially in schools with pending implementation of this uniform policy. However, it should be noted that in schools already with the uniform policy, it can be observed that the students are not competing and there is less focus in fashion, and the focus is directed towards their learning. The students obsessed in fashion and can afford can lavish themselves with the expensive and fashionable clothes at home but when they go to school, all of them will be wearing the same. Instances of peer pressure will diminish because of lesser competition in the school regarding their individual appearances.

With school uniforms that all the students will wear, there will be no question of who can afford the fashionable brands worn by the rich and famous. The students who cannot afford the expensive clothing will not be looked down upon because they are all wearing the same while in school. They will all be the same in the eyes of everybody because they are wearing the prescribed uniform, and if these are clean and neat, they will all look elegant in these uniforms.
